Review: Wayneston Bears on "Super Family" 超級一家, aired on 28 December 2014

We are pleased to be casted in a role as a Teddy Bear Artist/Instructor on the recent kids' programme 超級一家 (Super Family) aired on 28 December 2014.

The 3 hosts of the show are Sugie, Lina Ng and Oh Ling En. Each one of them has a different but yet unique personality. At times, they are serious and sometimes they can a little crazy which makes the show more entertaining, funny and less predictable.

L-R: Ling En, Wayne, Lina and Sugie.

In this TV programme, they act as a family helping a different child each week to achieve their wishes to learn a new skill or fulfill their dream occupation. It's an enriching info-educational programme for all children.

On this episode, the family approached Wayne to help a six year old little girl, Pei Fen, to fulfill her dream of creating a special handmade bear for her sister.

Wayne and Pei Fen

The first part of the programme was held at the MINT Museum of Toys. Wayne is more than happy to act as Teddy Bear Curator and gave a short introduction about the History of Teddy Bears. For your information, Wayne had worked at the MINT Museum in the past!

After the introduction at the MINT Museum, we then proceeded to an office to coach little Pei Fen on how to create a simple bear. Wayne first introduced several different types of fabrics that can be used to make a Teddy Bear. A fleece material was then chosen later by Pei Fen to create a bear with 3 piece pattern.

The bear designed by Wayne specially for the show was simple bear for beginner, especially for children. Made using Fleece fabric, it has plastic safety eyes to provide a safer playing environment for children. Although the bear design has already been simplified, it was still a challenge for Pei Fen. Wayne had to be patient and provide guidiance to complete the bear.

The finished bear was created with the joint efforts of both Pei Fen and Wayne. All of us were extremely pleased with the end product as the bear looked presentable.

After the filming, Wayne took the opportunity to take a group photo with the crew and hosts.

Below is a youtube video of the show. We hope you will enjoy it just as much as we do.

Bear of the Day ~ Marcus

Presenting to you Marcus, a cute little bear designed for the upcoming Make a Bear workshop happening on 10 January 2015.

At just 6.5 inches tall, Marcus is petite in size! Being T-pin jointed at the head and string jointed at the limbs, he is able to move and pose in various positions.

Marcus is simple and easy to create; designed for beginners who wants to learn how to make a teddy bear. In just 4 hours, you will be able to create your own bear from scratch!

Some basic techniques you will learn during the workshop includes back stitching, ladder stitching, embroidering of nose, setting and placement of eyes, and string jointing a bear. Understanding and learning these techniques will enable you to make more miniature bears by yourself in future!

We have 3 more seats available for this workshop, so sign up now to avoid disappointment!

Shinee the Christmas Bear

Shinee is a very special bear which I have created to celebrate this joyous Christmas occasion. He is made from beautiful topaz and cyan colour mohair which are both hand dyed by me. Hence, I am pleased to say that he is truly One-of-a-kind!

Shinee has a cotter pin joint which gives him a wobble head and is 4-way jointed at his limbs. A purple ribbon is tied around his neck to match his purple embroidered nose.

Shinee is created as a Christmas exchange bear for our SIngapore Teddy Bear Lovers gathering. My best friend, Philip has won Shinee and we have agreed to let go this lovely bear to someone that would like to adopt him and give him a home this Christmas.

So... he is now available for adoption again on Bear Pile and ABI.

Click on the link below to view more images and description about him.

We hope you will like Shinee! Counting down 8 days to Christmas!

Xmas Party with the Singapore Teddy Bear Lovers

We had a wonderful evening last Saturday with the Singapore Teddy Bear Lovers group!

Once again, we had the gathering at Evelyn's house. We also has a pot luck session where everyone brought a dish to share with everyone else.

All of us started to arrive from 3.30pm and the dinner commenced at 5.30pm. As you can see, some of the food we brought includes Honey Glazed Gammon Ham, Smoked Duck, Baked Tomatoes, Fried Bee Hoon and Fish Balls. For dessert we had Green Tea Panna Cotta, and of course, a Christmas Log Cake! Evelyn also prepared bottles of Sparkling wine to celebrate this joyous occasion.

We also welcomed Lilian, who was introduced to the group by Ivy. With the Christmas songs humming in the background, we toasted the sparkling wine in the air while feasting on the scrumptious food.

The highlight of the evening was the Christmas Exchange! As agreed in the previous meetup, all of us agreed to make a Teddy Bear from a same pattern and do an exchange. However look at what had happened! All of our bears turned out in various sizes! This could probably be due to the individual printer settings when we print out the bear pattern.

Our Xmas Bear Exchange!

Not to our surprise, it turned out that most of us didn't want to swap our bears! Some of us are still beginners and unwilling to swap bears as it's they have spent lots of time and effort in making the bear.

As an artist, I can relate to that as I have also been through that stage. However, I am glad this gave everyone, including beginners, to make another bear all by themselves! I am glad that my students are able to complete a bear without my assistance!

In the end only 4 of us, namely Philip, Evelyn, Chio and myself agreed to do a Teddy Bear Swap! The rest of us had a random Christmas Gift exchange as well.

We want to thank Evelyn, for providing us her beautiful house for the Christmas Gathering. It seems like it has unofficially became our Singapore Teddy Bear Gathering headquarters! (Just kidding)

With great food and company, bear making is always fun. We look forward to our next gathering in February next year as we celebrate Chinese New Year. Till then!

Hugs, Wayne

Busy is good!

Hi everyone! It has been a long time since the blog has been updated.

Most of you must be wondering what I have been up to. Well just to share with you, I am in the midst of preparing a series of events for 2015.

Currently, I am working on 3 customed dragons for a collector, 1 Xmas teddy for xmas exchange, 2 Valentine Teddy Bears for the Make a Bear Workshop which will take place in January 2015.

We are also looking at revamping our website and have been looking at different website platforms.

We are pleased to annouce that we have registered a new company called Wayneston Studios! We are aiming to provide a variety of workshops to cater to the different needs of people. Teddy Bear makers will also be able to purchase bear making materials from us through the revamped website. Stay tuned and we will update everyone with more exciting news once everything has been finalised.

In addition, we will be featured on a Channel 8 Kid's Programme "Super Family" sometime in mid December.

Below are some of the "work in progress" creations. With so many things currently on-going, we can't wait to see what next year will bring to us. I am sure exciting times are ahead and we will be back to share more updates soon. Stay tuned!

Hugs,
Wayne
